Who runs Owetell

Owetell is built and run by one independent developer based in Sydney, Australia. When this page says "I" or "me", that is who it means. You can reach me at seishun.code@gmail.com.

What is stored

Account: your email address, display name and user id. If you sign in with Google, also the basic profile details Google shares for sign-in.

Rooms: room names, members, invites, expenses, splits, categories, notes, subscriptions, payments and currency settings that you or other members add.

Usage: page views, device and browser type and similar basic events through Firebase Analytics. Expense descriptions, room names, notes and amounts are never sent to analytics.

What is stored on your device

The app keeps your sign-in session and a copy of your rooms in your browser so it can load quickly and work offline. Owetell does not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Who can see it

Members of a room can see that room: its name, members, expenses, splits, balances and payments. Nobody else can, and room pages are not indexed by search engines.

Services I use

Google Firebase handles sign-in, the database and analytics. Vercel hosts the website and the AI connector, in its Singapore region. These services process data only to run Owetell, which means your data may be stored or processed outside Australia.

The AI connector

If you connect Owetell to Claude through the MCP connector, it acts as you with your permissions. What you send to your AI assistant is covered by that provider’s own privacy policy. If you never connect it, nothing is shared with an AI provider.

Keeping and deleting data

Your data is kept while your account exists. Deleted rooms and expenses can be restored for 7 days, then they are removed for good. A deleted payment stays stored with its room, so nobody can quietly rewrite a room’s payment history. The payment is removed when the room is removed. Invite links expire after 7 days.

You can download a copy of your data, or delete your account, from your profile in the app. Deleting your account deletes your login, username, subscriptions and any room where you are the only member. In rooms you share, you leave the room. Your name, and the expenses and payments you were part of, stay on that room’s ledger. They stay because they are part of the other members’ balances. If you own a shared room, you make someone else the owner or delete the room first.

For anything else, such as correcting something you can’t edit yourself, email me at seishun.code@gmail.com from the address on your account. I will reply within 30 days.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and stored encrypted at rest by Google Firebase. Access to rooms and profiles is limited by sign-in and database security rules. No online service can promise perfect security, so use a strong password and only invite people you trust.

Children

Owetell is not meant for anyone under 13. If you think a child has signed up, email me and I will remove the account.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, I will update the date above and mention it in the app.
