Split a receipt by asking
Using Claude and the Owetell connector to add a grocery receipt to a shared room.
- send a photo of the Sari Market receipt and say "add this to flat 2b"
- Claude reads six items and applies the 12% member discount to each one
- it loads the room members: maya, dev, ana
- it asks who paid, and whether to split evenly, per item, or by percentage
- it shows the finished split before it saves anything
- it saves six expenses with owetell_add_expenses_bulk, and dev is owed $35.27
1. Send the photo
Send the receipt photo to Claude with a message like add this to flat 2b. With the Owetell MCP connector added, Claude can read your rooms, members and balances through your account.
2. Apply the discount
The Sari Market receipt has six items, a 12% member discount and 5% tax. Claude applies the discount to each item first. The $18.00 coffee becomes $15.84. Each person then pays the discounted price of what they had.
- Six items
- $54.60
- 12% member discount
- -$6.55
- Tax 5%
- $2.40
- Total
- $50.45
3. Say who paid and who had what
Claude looks up the room members with owetell_list_room_members (maya, dev and ana). Then it asks who paid and how to split: evenly, per item, or by percentage. This example splits per item: coffee to maya and ana, pasta to dev, the rest shared by all three.
4. Check, then save
Claude shows the split before saving anything. Once you confirm, owetell_add_expenses_bulk adds six expenses to the room. They are normal expenses you can edit or delete. Dev paid, so dev is owed $35.27.
Setting it up
Owetell has no AI built in. The connector runs from your own Claude account, so nothing changes in the app if you never use it. The connector page has setup steps and every tool it exposes.
